How to use this download
Track where and when a cat scratches to make better decisions about posts, pads and furniture protection.
- Identify the preferred scratching location, orientation and surface texture before buying a replacement.
- Try placing a stable appropriate scratcher beside the chosen spot and notice voluntary use.
- Review the observation log after several days; change one feature at a time so you can understand the result.
Practical example
Example: a cat scratching a sofa arm may prefer a tall, solid vertical post beside the sofa, while a rug-scratcher may prefer a horizontal pad.
Helpful to know: Scratching is normal feline behaviour. Avoid punishment, and contact a veterinarian if scratching becomes sudden, extreme or accompanied by other concerning changes.
Choose scratchers based on observation, not guesswork
Note whether your cat prefers horizontal or vertical scratching, the texture of the surface and the time of day. Offer a stable appropriate alternative next to a frequently used spot, reward voluntary use and give the cat time to explore. Avoid punishment or forcing paws onto the scratcher. The goal is to provide satisfying scratching options, not to eliminate a normal feline behavior.
What you'll plan and record
- Map the furniture or surfaces your cat chooses, the direction of scratching and the time of day it happens.
- Compare stable scratchers of suitable height and texture in the location the cat already uses, rather than buying several random posts.
- Note voluntary use and gently reward the alternative; avoid spraying water, frightening deterrents or physically forcing paws onto a post.
Comparing scratching locations
A cat damaging the sofa after waking may benefit from a tall, sturdy scratcher right beside that corner. A daily log makes it easy to see whether placement helped before moving it farther away.
